First of all it doesn't matter which program you use for protection, it depends on with what you get this viruses. Are you downloading stuff, maybe illegal?! Also a good firewall can help, not the windows firewall. Spybot is more for destroying and finding spyware when it is already on your computer. AVG which one are you having? Spyware or virusprotection?

AVG lets mostly the computer directly infacting with the virus. Avira is a bit different, it often tells you directly when a virus tries to hack in your system. Avast, restores the virus to the original file, most likely a download.

No one (or two) products will be able to detect all nasties.

The best you can do is have a few running, for example Spybot, Ad-Aware, SpywareBlaster, Windows Defender, and any virus scanning program.

It would be helpful if you could supply more details of your (computer's) infection.
